Update on Naked Security

To consolidate all of our security intelligence and news in one location, we have migrated Naked Security to the Sophos News platform.

Dear Naked Security readers,

Firstly, thank you for your interest, your time, and your contributions to the Naked Security community. Your invaluable engagement and expertise have helped improve cybersecurity for everyone.

We have recently added the extensive catalog of Naked Security articles to the Sophos News blog platform, enabling us to provide all Sophos security research, insights, and intelligence in a single location.

We are redirecting articles from Naked Security to Sophos News and you can continue to access the Naked Security article library whenever you need it.

As adversary behaviors evolve, we’re seeing increased demand for deep threat research to help defenders keep pace with today’s fast-changing, innovative attacks. In response, we’re increasing our content focus on proprietary research by our Sophos X-Ops team.

Sophos X-Ops is a cross-functional team of more than 500 threat intelligence and security experts with visibility into attacker behaviors and other important topics including ransomware attacker trends, cluster attacks, software vulnerabilities, supply chain attacks, zero days, and much more. You can find their articles in the Security Operations, Threat Research and AI Research sections of this blog.

We’re extremely proud of Naked Security’s contributions to the security community over the last decade. Paul Ducklin will continue to share his security expertise on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn

If you don’t already, we invite you to subscribe to receive our Sophos News blog email (sign-up at the bottom of this page) and follow Sophos X-Ops on X (Twitter) and Mastodon.

Whether you’re a threat hunter, security administrator, IT/security generalist, home user or more, we know you will find Sophos X-Ops a valuable resource.

Thank you for your support.

Sophos

Great to hear Paul will still be contributing. The way he explains these things in terms us admins can understand is invaluable.

As a former editor of Naked Security, I am very sad indeed to see this, and think this is a short-sighted move. Killing off a well-known and hugely respected brand that not only paved the way for God only knows how many imitations but managed to stand out in a crowded field for the quality of its writing and content seems at best short-sighted and at worse just plain destructive.

Thank you to all the writers I learned so much from, both as a reader of NS and as a former editor.

Is the RSS feed URL changing?

If you would like to receive updates on articles on Sophos News, please complete the short form at the bottom of the page.

Thought it had been very quiet on the RSS feed for a while.
Is that a “No” to the RSS feed question?

Sorry for the delay on the RSS info. The Naked Security feed will be discontinued. For those that want it, there is a feed for the threat info on Sophos News (https://news.sophos.com/en-us/category/threat-research/feed) but the Naked Security feed will not be updated automatically to include this content.

Very disappointed to lose the Podcasts. I do not have work access to social media. Very cavalier of you to assume I do.

This is great news for those workplaces that filter words like ‘naked’ in URLs. For clarification, which of the category options are those of Naked Security? Is Ducklin still going to post with the blog here with some type of tag?

Since I don’t use most social media, I won’t be able to follow from other platforms.

All of the Naked Security articles from 2015 are showing in this new Naked Security category. Paul will be posting on his personal social media sites (links above).

“We’re extremely proud of Naked Security’s contributions to the security community over the last decade. Paul Ducklin will continue to share his security expertise on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.”

Wait, so Duck’s not going to be sharing his expertise via articles on here anymore?
Or am I misunderstanding?

Duck will no longer be sharing his expertise on the blog, but is already providing his insights and advise via his social channels using the links in the article.

That is highly unfortunate to hear that Duck will not be continuing to share his wit & expertise with us here.
Since his articles were the reason I was coming here every day, I guess that means I don’t need to come back here anymore.

It just seems silly to me that Sophos would simply terminate such a long-running and well-liked article series (maybe rename/rebrand it, but not outright terminate).

Is there an option for a daily newsletter for Sophos News? I rely on emails to keep up to date. I don’t have social media at work (something that was brought up previously) so I’d prefer to receive emails if possible. Thanks!

Yes, Sophos News does have a newsletter – you can sign up at the bottom of the page and select the topics you’re interested in. We publish several article a week, but not necessarily one every day.

I’m disappointed in these changes. . . I don’t use the major social media platforms and email newsletters aren’t my preference.

Why no straight yes/no answers to the questions regarding the continuation of the Naked Security podcast and RSS feed?

This announcement and responses to questions reeks of PR speak. We’re accustomed to better from Sophos. . .

As a home user I could understand almost everything that would concern me about my computer from the articles posted in the Naked Security newsletter.

But after looking at the choices for the current news emails there is nothing that I could understand enough to be helpful. Everything changes and I will really miss the NS newsletter in future.

I work in IT and I’m confused. What the hell is “#SophosLife” ? What is the difference between Threat Research and Security Operations?

I presume the “Global Security News” window at the bottom of Sophos Central is powered by the RSS feed and if so I guess that, too, will go. What a shame. As something I visit every (working) day this was a good way to keep in touch with important issues affecting endpoint security without needing to subscribe to yet another email newsletter.

Thanks to Duck while it lasted.

Damon, the Global Security News window will be removed from Sophos Central in mid October. I am glad you found having the feed here useful and will pass on your feedback to the Central engineering team.

Threat Research is (mostly) insights from Sophos Labs into adversary behaviors and malware, while Security Operations focuses on providing intel for those detecting, investigating and responding to threats. #SophosLife shares more general, community-focused updates from the Sophos team.

Very disappointed. I don’t use Twitter nor have I have ever heard of Mastodon. I used to get my info from your emails and Facebook. I think you should reinstate a Facebook presence for those of us that try not to give our details to any more websites by subscribing. It’s such a great service you provide and you are cutting many of us off just as we need you more and even though we subscribe to your products.

Really sad news I can’t believe it has been that long, Thanks for all the great articles and invaluable information
Miss you Great Team.

Like posters before me, I don’t use any of those social media tools that you are relegating Paul Ducklin to. It is a sad loss that you aren’t continuing to have him contributing in blog format or in podcast transcripts I can read (I don’t listen to podcasts). Naked security has always made things understandable and fun to read. Sad loss.

I have been using Sophos for for years, and welcomed the daily security updates. As I don’t use any social media, I am grateful that you have ensured that people like me can continue to receive this excellent intel and guidance. Keep up the great work, Sophos team.

I mostly stay off/logged out of social media, listen to podcasts on my music player while working. I’ve been concerned about computer security for 30 years. Don’t trust cell phone security, and am usually in a rural cell-dead area. I’ll miss Naked Security and the wonderful Duck and team.

Paul, please start a new blog.
The information you provide is so much easier to find when it is on the internet.

Security information shouldn’t be tight to social media platforms.

It should be accessible for everyone.

I’m repeating Bob’s question because he did not get a proper answer: “Is the RSS feed URL changing?”

(re-posting here) Sorry for the delay on the RSS info. The Naked Security feed will be discontinued. For those that want it, there is a feed for the threat info on Sophos News (https://news.sophos.com/en-us/category/threat-research/feed) but the Naked Security feed will not be updated automatically to include this content.

I tend to agree with others. I don’t use all of the social media stuff. I don’t like the way they abuse our data and privacy, and I don’t have time to wade through a bunch of different blogs and sites. This is what makes Naked Security so great, I get an email, once a day, with short descriptions and links to the articles in case I want to read more. I will hate to see it go. There are too many feeds, blogs, podcasts and more out there, that you can’t keep up with them all.

The Naked Security emails are something I look forward to seeing each day and I have encouraged home users, clients and other people, technical or non-technical, to subscribe because of how simple the articles are to read and understand. I told them that they can get a lot of easy-to-understand information and if there is more technical information, they can follow the links to learn more, when you have included them. Such a sad day.

I did wonder why the Naked Security emails had stopped arriving in my mailbox for nearly a month now. Things change but its sad this has stopped.

Why? The daily email and the excellent podcast transcripts were a concise, often amusing and always educational one-stop highlight on security issues that anyone doing pretty much anything involving a computer-based device needed to know. No flannel, no waffle and written in a way that made even quite complicated issues remarkably easy to understand. A bad move and very, very disappointing.

I looked forward to these emails and articles by the team, not sure if there is any equivalent options out there that explain things in a detailed and simple way. As others, I’ll miss their contribution to the education of others.

I am very sorry about the shutting down of this blog. It was a freebie in the Sophos galaxy that I recommended to friends and at a few meetings where I happened to tell others about my experience with Sophos.
Its unique approach, authoritative, comprehensive and at the same time accessible, made it a pleasantly informative read.
I hope that Paul Ducklin will and can continue to do what he does so well on another blog and that can be summed up in the words that introduce his Instagram page, “My special skill is explaining complicated cybersecurity stuff in plain English so that everyone can understand it.”

A sad day. I’ve always enjoyed Duck’s articles and his interpretation of complex exploits in an easy to understand way. I also don’t use social media and will struggle to find a better provider of useful relevant information.

I’m really sad to see that Paul Ducklin and Naked Security are gone. None of the other alternative options you’ve offered as replacements are as interesting to me.

I am another now-disappointed NS reader. I too don’t want to have to use the sm feeds to access Paul’s articles.

Well talk about a disappointment. I can’t access Twitter or Mastadon at work. Why only social media? Goodbye bookmark.

It’s astonishing that Sophos is abandoning NS. One of the few voices in the Cybersecurity wilderness that was timely, knowledgeable, insightful, and served with humor. The only one of my many newsfeeds that I actually looked forward to reading.

I hope Paul will find a new platform worthy of his talent.

I’m out, visited Naked News daily.

This format does not add anything at all and the lack of content lately is not justified, the security landscape is intense and the fact that Sophos thinks now is the best time to make a big change is concerning.

My wagon is now unhitched and will find a new home.

Some security minded employers and admins (like myself), don’t allow social media through the firewall. Bit of a Bush League move.

I too enjoyed Paul’s simple explanations of complex issues, together with the ability to quickly scan the headlines and then read only the articles of interest.
Since I am another non-user of social media, I guess Sophos has kicked me to the curb. Thanks. /s
