i do like google and dropbox way they handle 2FA as there is 0 way of preventing the SMS from been sent when you successfully get the email and password right and if that happens and you get a 2FA code out of the blue you know someone has your email password (as you did not login for it to be sent to you) if you use the authenticator way you have to check your login history manually to check to see if you had any failed code attempts
most people don’t treat their passwords as important and assume no one will know it (using it on the same one on all websites) i do try to get them to use 2FA on there email as if they have your email they own all your sites you ever used
