Whats wrong with web based email services?

Reply

That’s Chester’s opinion, so don’t take my reply as his answer :-)

I’m not quite so vehemently against webmail as Chet, at least for individuals, *provided that you remember that most webmail services are NOT free, because you are paying in kind by allowing the service provide to read your email before you do for the purpose of targeting you with ads*.

But for a small business, it’s surprisingly easy to run your own email server these days. (Exchange is pretty easy to set up, for example, and gets regular security patches from Microsoft.)

The main advantages are obvious: it’s your own email, on your own server, in your own jurisdiction, under a business policy entirely of your own choosing.

OTOH, most major webmail services have done well on the security front, having not been penetrated by crooks; they have little or no downtime; and they save you the time and trouble of setting up your own mail handling system…

Decisions, decisions!

Just keep in mind: it’s never been easier to set up your own email infrastructure, so don’t let any SMTP/POP3/IMAP pain you may have suffered back in 1999 put you off having another go at it! There’s a lot to be said for keeping your very own email on your very own terms…

It’s tricky for us to support you here…have you tried our online Mac forum? There’s an active community there:

Having said that, if the malware isn’t active in memory, i.e. is just sitting around on disk (e.g. in one or more temporary files), you could try using the [Reveal in Finder] button in the Sophos Quarantine Manager, and simply delete the offending files. Move them to the Trash and then empty it.
