Members of our Sophos Women in Tech group recently had the opportunity to present at the Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) 2021 Conference on The New Threat Landscape in a Post Pandemic World.
Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) is a global community of women, allies, and advocates, that are dedicated to bringing talented women together to celebrate and foster their passion and drive for cybersecurity. WiCyS unites local communities of aspiring and thriving women cybersecurity professionals across the world to collaborate, share their knowledge, network, and mentor. They create opportunities through professional development programs, conferences, career fairs, and more.
Principal Software Engineer Awalin Sopan and Director of Program Management Reshma Shahabuddin joined the panel to discuss how the pandemic has posed a new set of challenges in the cybersecurity domain, resulting in a 300% increase of cybercrime. Attackers (threat actors) are taking advantage of this multifold increase of our virtual footprints. The year 2020 has seen a rise of:
- Remote office but with low security/no vpn
- More online activities
- Volatile market
- AI/ML used in newer attacks
People are generally anxious during a pandemic and are more vulnerable to cyber-attacks and attackers are leveraging AI to take advantage of this situation. The panel focused on the use of AI, and related technologies, to help us prevent and overcome these new challenges.
